Weird But True

Mailman cornered by wild turkeys forced to call for help

A tough gang of wild turkeys went postal Tuesday, trapping a New Jersey mailman in his truck — and forcing him to call the cops for help.

Seven of the spunky squawkers stormed the vehicle and “surrounded” it on Esplanade and Parkview drives around 12:10 p.m., according to the Hillsdale Police Department.

The brassy birds forced the mailman to skip three houses along his route, a spokesman for the United States Postal Service said.

“A Hillsdale NJ letter carrier was attacked … by a flock of turkeys. The carrier was not injured,” said USPS spokesman George Flood.

Two cops rushed to the scene, scaring away the 20-pound birds by simply, “walking towards them,” police said.

The bird-brained bullies are known in the neighborhood for being loud, obnoxious, and mean, neighbors said.

“They bark like dogs and cackle. They’re extremely aggressive — I’ve had to throw rocks at them,” said neighbor Terrence Reilly, adding the birds often block driveways.

Spring mating season starts soon, likely transforming the turkeys into tyrants, experts said.

“They’re aggressive during mating season because they think you’re moving in on their women folk. It was probably a group of young male turkeys feeling their oats,” said Don Torino, president of the Bergen County Audubon Society.

The hawkish gobblers may also have been in a sour mood because they were looking for food in the area, which is near a wetland, Torino noted.
