Bill Simmons’ ESPN bitterness clouds new website launch

Bill Simmons hasn’t forgiven ESPN just yet.

On Wednesday, as he returned to the written Internet by announcing his new digital venture will be called The Ringer and will host his popular column, Simmons continued to take shots at his former employer.

When asked what he learned about the business of running Grantland, the buzzy sports-and-culture website that was shut down last year, a few months after he was forced out at the Worldwide Leader, Simmons tweeted: “Don’t do it with ESPN.”

The Ringer’s landing page was launched Wednesday. Simmons’ spokesman told CNN it will be “the exclusive home to all of Simmons’ written material,” and it will start as an email newsletter in mid-March. The actual site “will debut sometime this late spring or early summer,” the spokesman said.

Simmons also announced eight new hires for The Ringer — many of them Grantland alums — to join the four top editors who made the exodus soon after his divisive ESPN ouster.

Simmons has been heard again in the digital realm for months, releasing podcasts on the suitably named Bill Simmons Podcast Network, and previously announced a television production deal with HBO.
