NFL hate magnet Roger Goodell made $34M in the Ray Rice year

You won’t have Roger Goodell’s outlandish compensation to kick around anymore.

The NFL reported this week that Goodell was paid $34 million in 2014, but that will be the last time the league has to publicly reveal its commissioners’ controversial income level after becoming a for-profit entity last year.

The NFL previously had to disclose the salaries of Goodell and its highest-paid executives under federal tax laws because the league office had declared itself a non-profit enterprise.

Goodell’s 2014 income was down slightly from the $35 million he earned in 2013 and the $44 million he was paid by the owners in 2012.

According to the filing, Goodell had a $3.5 million base salary, a bonus of $26.5 million that was determined in 2013, a $3.7 million pension contribution and $273,000 in “reportable compensation.”

The slight decline is understandable — and arguably not nearly as much as it should have been — considering 2014 was the roughest year of Goodell’s tenure thanks to the Ray Rice, Greg Hardy and Adrian Peterson cases.

In the nine years in which his compensation has been disclosed, Goodell has made an average of $20 million a year and a total of $180.5 million.

Goodell’s compensation is determined by the league’s compensation committee of owners, who rely on consultants and comparisons to top executives at other sports and entertainment firms.
