Diamond giant raises awareness to protect world’s rhinos

De Beers, the diamond conglomerate, has a less glamorous side interest: rescuing rhinos.

According to our Lisa Fickenscher, the Botswana-based company hosted a dinner at Le Bernardin on Thursday, drawing boldface names such as Uma Thurman and Gloria Steinem, among other deep-pocketed guests, to launch the US chapter of Rhino Rescue Botswana.

The nonprofit is raising awareness about poachers who have decimated the population of these ancient animals. Turns out Steinem celebrated her 80th birthday in the African nation in 2014, while last year Thurman paid a visit and assisted in rhino rescue activities, which were chronicled in the October issue of Town & Country.

These “herbivore animals are undeserving of our carnivorous behavior,” Thurman declared. “Blood will be unbearably on all of our hands if we don’t do what we can.”
