Patriots release troubled running back after covert deal

Montee Ball was released by the Patriots. Montee Ball was still on the Patriots?

That was the reaction after the team cut the running back on Tuesday, four days after he was arrested for an apparent domestic dispute with his girlfriend. Prosecutors charged Ball on Monday with misdemeanor disorderly conduct for an incident early Friday at a hotel in downtown Madison, Wis.

Ball, a second-round pick by the Broncos in 2013, spent the season on the Patriots practice squad, but his contract expired on Feb. 1. The Patriots signed him to a future deal for 2016, but the minor move was never announced. Ball’s release on Tuesday was a part of the NFL’s official transaction report.

The woman told police she and Ball were arguing when he threw her in the air and she landed on a table, cutting her leg. A criminal complaint says Ball also was charged with misdemeanor battery for allegedly striking the woman on the face five days earlier.
