Man who killed woman and cut off her fingertips gets 18 years to life

Charles Wright

A man who strangled a Brooklyn woman before cutting off her fingertips and dumping her body in Jamaica Bay was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison Wednesday in Brooklyn Supreme Court.

Charles Wright plead guilty in January to murdering Shaniqua Davis inside her East New York apartment following an argument in July 2014.

Wright, of the Bronx, then stuffed her bound corpse into a large brown laundry bag, crammed her into the trunk of her own car, and threw her off the Canarsie Pier.

Her rotting remains were found on a tidal island a month later, still in the bag.

After killing Davis, Wright used her debit card to withdrawal $141.50 from her accounts. He also bought food purchases at Family Dollar, Wendy’s, and Burger King.

Wright also plead guilty in January to grand larceny in the fourth degree for the thefts.

“This horrific murder was made even worse by this defendant’s barbaric mutilation and subsequent dumping of the victim’s body into Jamaica Bay,’ Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said in a statement. “Such sadistic acts show that the defendant is simply unfit to remain in society.”

Wright’s girlfriend, Tamanika Evans, has also pleaded guilty to helping him dispose of the body, and faces six years in prison on charges of hindering the prosecution and fourth degree grand larceny.
