TV star makes history as female coach, hires 2 Live Crew rapper

A Miami high school team is handing their football team over to a reality starlet and a former rapper.

Miami Jackson High introduced Lakatriona Brunson, who is featured on TruTV’s “South Beach Tow,” as their head coach on Monday, making her the first female head coach in Florida history. Her defensive coordinator is Luther Campbell, a member of 80s-90s rap group 2 Live Crew.

While the moves sound like a publicity stunt, both have a football pedigree. Brunson played for the Miami Fury, which used to play in the Independent Woman’s Football League, and has coached the girl’s flag football team at Jackson. Campbell’s post-music career has included several stops in Florida as a defensive coordinator.

“We’re just here to change the atmosphere at Miami Jackson and get some W’s on the board,” Bronson said at Monday’s press conference, according to the Miami Herald. “I know I can do it. … Watch what we’re going to do. It’s some big things coming up. We’re not here to talk about music or reality TV. We’re here to talk about football only.”

Brunson is a driver and assistant manager at Tremont Towing, which became the focus of a reality show in 2011.

“It’s a lot of people that probably applied for this position and look who is here,” Brunson said. “I’m ready for whatever comes my way. I’m ready to fight, ready to get these guys prepared and ready to win.”
