Girl killed in car accident one block from her school

A 12-year-old girl was killed when she was struck by a car while walking to school on Long Island Monday morning, officials said.

The girl was attempting to cross near the intersection of Elmont Road and Village Avenue when a driver in a Nissan Rogue plowed into her around 7:30 a.m., according to Nassau County police.

The girl was less than a block away from her destination of Elmont Memorial High School when she died.

The driver remained at the scene and investigators do not believe there to be any criminality, although they could not say whether or not the car had been speeding.

The unidentified girl was taken to Franklin Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
