Driver punches off-duty cop who pulled him over, flees the scene

An off-duty cop trying to stop a reckless driver in The Bronx got punched in the face Tuesday night.

The officer was driving in Pelham Gardens at about 8:30 p.m. when he pulled over to avoid an SUV going the wrong way down Gunther Avenue near East Gun Hill Road, police said.

The cop yelled out, and the motorist stopped. The two were exchanging words when suddenly, the driver punched the officer, hopped back in his vehicle and fled the scene, police said.

The officer sustained minor injuries and was treated at Jacobi Medical Center. Police were continuing their search for the suspect.
