Twitter names new marketing chief after executive exodus

Twitter named American Express executive Leslie Berland as its chief marketing officer on Tuesday, a day after Chief Executive Jack Dorsey announced the exodus of four top executives.

“Welcoming @leslieberland to Twitter! She will join as our CMO to help tell the stories of our iconic product!,” Dorsey tweeted.

Berland, who joined AmEx in 2005, is credited with bolstering the credit card giant’s social media presence on Twitter and Facebook as executive vice president of global advertising, marketing and digital partnerships.

The new appointment comes after Dorsey confirmed reports over the weekend that four senior execs were exiting: Media head Katie Jacobs Stanton, product chief Kevin Weil, engineering division head Alex Roetter and human-resources head Brian “Skip” Schipper.

Twitter co-founder Dorsey, who is 100 days into his second stint as CEO, is overhauling the company in a bid to reboot growth. The share price fell 35 percent last year as Twitter struggled to sign up new users.

In a separate move aimed at shoring up its “hard-core” user base, Twitter has either stopped displaying ads or greatly reduced the number it shows to its most prominent and active users, according to tech blog Re/code.

Twitter shares fell 3 cents on Tuesday, to $16.99.
