The key to weight loss is in your spice cabinet

Looking to boost your metabolism? Turn to your spice rack. “It’s easy to instantly increase both the flavor and the fat-burning potential of any dish,” says chef Rocco DiSpirito, whose new book, “The Negative Calorie Diet,” focuses on metabolism-boosting foods, including these spices.

It helps keep blood-sugar levels steady, a big must when dieting. “When your blood-sugar level drops, you make a beeline for the nearest bagel,” DiSpirito says.

Full of calcium and fiber, this spice will keep you full longer. Use it in place of sugar when mixing your coffee, or sprinkle it over your morning oatmeal.

This hot number can increase your body’s fat-burning ability by as much as 25 percent, DiSpirito says. Add a pinch to juices, smoothies, meat dishes and roasted veggies.

“[It] contains a powerful anti-inflammatory called gingerol,” DiSpirito says. This can help calm an upset stomach and reduce hunger. Try grating fresh ginger root over fish.
