Giants report card: Fitting grade for a season of soft defense

Offense

How can it be that Rashad Jennings runs for a season-high 170 yards, Eli Manning throws two TD passes and the Giants don’t win? Key play was Manning losing ball from behind and Walter Thurmond returning it 83 yards. Not exactly a huge return from suspension for Odell Beckham Jr. (5 catches, 54 yards). TE Will Tye (5 catches, 67 yards) made great strides as a rookie.

Grade: B-minus

Defense

Fitting finale. Zach Ertz (9 catches, 152 yards) the latest tight end to rip through the shoddy coverage. Sam Bradford (30 of 38, 320 yards) not under much duress. Brandon Meriweather must have failed geometry because he has no idea about angles. He took two brutal ones, on DeMarco Murray’s 54-yard TD run and Ertz’s 60-yard catch-and-run. Jason Pierre-Paul deflected two passes in what could be his last game in blue.

Grade: D

Special teams

Josh Brown finished a solid season by going 3 for 3 on field goals, including a 48-yarder. Jayron Hosley downed a Brad Wing punt on the 2-yard line and later got another perfect Wing punt on the 3-yard line. Wing put all three of his punts down inside the 20. Beckham had a 5-yard punt return.

Grade: B-plus

Coaching

Tom Coughlin heard some jeers for not going for it on fourth down, punting one time, taking a field goal the second time. Coughlin was handed a losing deck all season. Ben McAdoo made Jennings the feature runner too late in the season. Steve Spagnuolo had no answers on third down: The Eagles converted an astonishing 10 of 13.
