The husband-and-wife terror team who killed 14 people in California never pledged support to jihadists on social media, FBI Director James Comey said Wednesday — rebutting previous reports citing top federal law enforcement officials.
While married killers Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik were said to have contacted suspected extremists through social media, Comey insisted that they only expressed support for “jihad and martyrdom” in “direct, private messages.”
“We have found no evidence of a posting on social media by either of them,” he said during a press conference with Police Commissioner Bill Bratton.
Comey added that there’s still no evidence the shooters belonged to a terrorist cell or had contact with overseas groups.
Earlier, law enforcement officials had said that Farook talked on the telephone and over social media with more than one person being investigated for terrorism.
It was also reported that during the attack, Tashfeen pledged her support to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on Facebook.
