Mets look like favorites to land Zobrist after missed meeting with Nationals

Ben Zobrist didn’t meet with the Nationals after all on Tuesday, and he’s huddling with his agents in his Franklin, Tenn. home (very close to these winter meetings) with a decision on his future coming as soon as Tuesday night. The Mets appear to the favorites in the sweepstakes to land the switch-hitting utility man.

That Zobrist didn’t meet at all with Nationals officials — plans for a get-together “didn’t work out,” a source said — bodes poorly for Washington’s chances to land him. Zobrist traveled to New York and San Francisco this past week to meet with executives from the Mets and Giants, respectively, as he considered it quite important to get a feel for the organization he’d be joining.

While the Mets have not formally offered Zobrist a fourth guaranteed year, they have indicated their willingness to do so. Zobrist turns 35 in May.
