Schumer: It makes no sense that terror suspects can buy guns

Sen. Charles Schumer vowed Sunday to make a renewed push for a bill that would prevent terror suspects from legally buying guns and ammunition.

“If you are on a terrorist list, watch list, right now in America you can purchase a gun, no questions asked,” Schumer said. “It makes no sense that these very weapons here can be bought by people on a terrorist watch list.”

Schumer wants to propose a new vote for the bill — which narrowly failed last week — in the wake of the ISIS-inspired attack in San Bernardino.

“They were not on a watch list as best we know — they should have been, given their background,” Schumer noted. “We’re gonna bring that legislation back to the floor next week.”

Schumer also voiced his concern that terrorists may be using encryption software to hide their electronic communications.

“We’re gonna have to come up with a new regime on encryption,” he said. “I’ve asked the president to call together the leaders of the tech industry to work together on something that could really work.”
