Jose Reyes arrested for grabbing wife by throat

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Former Mets shortstop Jose Reyes was arrested on Halloween after allegedly assaulting his wife in Hawaii, according to a broadcast report on Monday.

Hawaii News Now reported Reyes is out on bail. The assault allegedly occurred in a Maui hotel room. The report said Reyes grabbed his wife, Katherine Ramirez, by the throat and shoved her into a sliding glass door during an argument.

According to the news station, hotel security called police, and the 32-year-old Reyes was arrested in the room.

Ramirez reportedly had sustained injuries to her thigh, neck and wrist.

One of Reyes’ agents, Chris Leible, declined comment.

Reyes finished this season with the Rockies after being dealt from the Blue Jays as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Troy Tulowitzki to Toronto in July. The former All-Star shortstop made it clear in subsequent interviews he was unhappy playing for the Rockies, who have struggled to remain competitive in recent years.

Reyes made his major league debut with the Mets in 2003 and left as a free agent following the 2011 season, when he signed a six-year, $106 million contract with the Marlins. But his stay in Miami was brief; Reyes was sent to the Blue Jays the following year after the Marlins decided to rebuild with younger players.
