Rangers coach: ‘Stupidity’ caused Cespedes drama

It was clear to see Rangers coach Alain Vigneault didn’t realize what kind of waves he was going to create with his comments about the Mets’ Yoenis Cespedes pulling himself from Game 5 of the World Series after taking a batted ball off his knee.

Vigneault had been on the Mets’ bandwagon all postseason, but after they lost the series to the Royals in Game 5 on Sunday and Cespedes was hurt, Vigneault said on Monday: “How about the one when you take the ball off the knee and you take yourself out of the game in the World Series?”

On Tuesday morning, before a Garden match against the Capitals, Vigneault was walking out of his press conference and was asked if he had any more thoughts on the Mets.

At first he didn’t want to answer, then stopped and said he had apologized to Mets manager Terry Collins.

“I sent Terry a text apologizing for my stupidity,” Vigneault said. “I shouldn’t have said that. . . . I should know better.”
