The Met Gala is going high-tech

Next year’s Met Gala theme will be “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” where hand-made and machine-made couture will collide, Vogue announced Tuesday.

Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton explained that these days it’s hard to tell the difference between handmade couture and ready to wear (or machine-made) garments, thanks to the wonders of technology. “This distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other,” he said in the announcement.

The exhibit will highlight more than 100 pieces and combine handmade techniques, such as embroidery and pleating, along with Silicon Valley contradictions of laser-cutting and circular knitting, reported Vogue. “In process” workshops will also show museum goers how the designs are made.

The annual night of glamour will take place on May 2, 2016. Along with Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Gala co-chairs will include Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, and Jonathan Ive.
