WASHINGTON — Democratic Party Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz backed the Iran nuclear deal Sunday, making what she called a “gut-wrenching” decision based partly on the fact that she’s a “Jewish mother.”
“There’s nothing more important to me as a Jew than to ensure that Israel’s existence is there throughout the generations,” she said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“There is no way that we would be able to ensure that better than approving this deal.”
Wasserman-Schultz, who runs the Democratic National Committee, added, “I’m the first Jewish woman to represent Florida in Congress. I’m a Jewish mother.”
Colin Powell, who served as secretary of state under George W. Bush, also threw his support behind the deal, which passed the critical threshold last week of veto-proof support among Senate Democrats when Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) became the 34th Democrat to back it.
