MTA to allow bikes on select city buses

Starting next week, city bike riders will be able to bring their wheels onto some buses.

Riders who take the S53 and S93 bus routes, which run between Staten Island and the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, will be able to hoist their bikes onto racks on the front of the routes’ buses. Still, each rack will only hold two bikes at a time.

Those two lines were chosen because they are close to bike paths and a college campus, transit officials said.

The MTA is launching the year-long test to see whether allowing bikes onto buses could slow down bus service or create safety issues on the roads.

Bike advocates said this is a huge step toward getting the Big Apple in line with other cities that have had bike racks on their buses for decades.

“This is a great place to try this out and respond to the demand,” said Caroline Samponaro, a director with Transportation Alternatives.
