This week’s couple: Deep-dive date

The common gripe about first-date conversation is how dry and surface it can be, but this was hardly the case for Mike, a 29-year-old who teaches philosophy, and Kadi, a 28-year-old who does project management for a department store.

Over sake flights at Tao in Midtown East, the two bonded over officiating friends’ weddings, family deaths, and Alaska. Is there another round of deep discussion in the two’s future?

I took Mike to be a supergoofy, down-to-earth guy and I was completely right. Mike radiates energy. I couldn’t wait to start talking to him.

It took us around three hours to finish our meal because we were talking so much. Our conversation wasn’t the awkward-first-date usual — it was deep and meaningful. He teaches philosophy at Rutgers, and we geeked out a few times about books.

At Tao, Mike was really adventurous with his sake selections, and we shared some great food. Our server was also amazing.

After dinner, we grabbed a couple of beers at a bar. We continued our conversation and closed the night with a goodbye kiss on the train. We’ve already been texting and I’m hoping to see him again very soon!

My first impression of Kadi was that she was cute, with a great smile and a fun laugh that put me quickly at ease.

Kadi and I have a lot in common -— some of it surprising. Both of us have officiated friends’ weddings and visited Alaska this summer. We’ve also both lost our fathers to cancer, and we talked about how that experience has shaped the people we are. It was unusual to speak so honestly and openly on a first date.

At Tao, the sake was amazing. We shared two flights. The scallops and tempura avocado were great, as were Kadi’s shrimp wraps.

After dinner we went to a German beer hall. We chatted some more and exchanged numbers. I’d like to see Kadi again. I’m going to see if she wants to go surfing…
