Sex & Relationships

This week’s couple: Writers block

Common interests don’t always make for good chemistry. Take Taylor and Dominick, for instance.

The two of them are both 27-year-old writers with funky styles — she has pink-dyed hair, he has a long, pinned-up mane — but when they met at Randolph Beer, these qualities weren’t enough.

Find out why each of them came out of the date with nothing more than good fodder for their future memoirs.

When I first saw Taylor, I could instantly see she was not my type — I’m not usually into blondes. But she looked like a cool girl, with pink-tipped hair, short shorts and just a little makeup.

Since I really wasn’t attracted to her physically, I wasn’t nervous. Personality-wise, she’s not far from what I’m into: creative, weird, confused about her life — like me.

Randolph Beer was great. The staff was friendly and the shrimp and grits were good.

We exchanged numbers, and I would hang out with her again as a friend, but not to date.

That’s always a weird position to take — one person usually wants a relationship more than the other — so I don’t know how I will proceed. I wouldn’t want to hurt her feelings by inviting her out to something that she would think is a date.

Dominick was on the smaller side and needed a haircut, but I liked his paint splattered jeans. I was hoping it wouldn’t be a boring date.

He reminded me of my favorite roommate, which is great if I was looking for a friend, and he had a bit too much erratic energy for my taste. We talked about music festivals — which I kind of hate — and music blogs.

The staff at Randolph Beer was super-friendly and the food was on par. I got a giant, spicy Bloody Mary pitcher.

Although Dominick is my age, I felt older, and that’s a turnoff. Hypothetically, I would hang out with Dominick again as a friend, except I don’t need any more friends.
