Congresswoman wants to end ban on USPS shipping booze

A California congresswoman is out to overturn a 106-year-old law that prohibits the US Postal Service from shipping booze.

“It’s ridiculous that we’re allowing UPS, FedEx and other companies to ship spirits, wine, and beer to consumers, while banning the US Postal Service from doing the exact same thing,” said Democrat Rep. Jackie Speier, who is sponsoring a bill to lift the booze ban.

The USPS Shipping Equity Act would allow the postal service to mail alcoholic beverages to customers 21 and over, and help the money-losing agency compete, said Speier’s office.

The ban dates back to 1909, when lawmakers barred the agency from shipping “all spirituous, vinous, malted, fermented or other intoxicating liquors of any kind.”
