5 reasons you need to be watching ‘Younger’

There’s a reason to take a breather from Netflix.

And it’s called “Younger.”

Starring Sutton Foster and Hilary Duff, the TV Land sitcom wraps its first season Tuesday night after what’s been an interesting freshman year.

After her deadbeat hubby kicks her to the curb, Liza (Foster) opts to re-enter the publishing scene after a decades-long absence. Problem is, no body’s hiring 40-something housewives from New Jersey. With the help of her Brooklynite BFF Maggie (Debi Mazar), Liza reinvents herself as a 26-year-old assistant to the Miranda Priestley-esque Diana Trout (Miriam Shor). But Liza’s new life isn’t all work and no play, especially after befriending the outgoing Kelsey (Duff) and hooking up with a much younger tattoo artist (Nico Tortorella).

If there is ever a time to tune in to “Younger” it’s now, and here’s why:

It’s tied to ‘Sex and the City’ — sort of

There’s a reason “Younger” boasts a bit of a “Sex and the City” vibe, and you can thank series creator Darren Star for that. The mastermind behind Carrie Bradshaw’s small-screen shenanigans is shaping another core-four for Generation Z, which includes a quirky publicist — not named Samantha — and a lesbian artist.

Lizzie McGuire, who?

Duff has come a long way since her Disney Channel days. As a newly tapped editor of Diana’s publishing house, Kelsey makes waves after inking acclaimed Swedish author Anton Bjornberg (Thorbjørn Harr). To ensure that Anton stays faithful to their deal, Kelsey is willing to risk her relationship with Wall Street boy toy Thad (Dan Amboyer) to keep the Swede pleased. Lizzie would not approve.

Sutton Foster and Debi Mazar will be your friends-spiration

If you thought Carrie Bradshaw had TV’s best group of gal pals, think again. While a suburbanite and a contemporary artist would hardly seem like a compatible combo, Liza and Maggie prove opposites attract (and triumph) with every misstep. Besides, a friend will only keep your secret. In Liza’s case, she has a best friend who is willing to commit to a life-changing secret with her.

It doesn’t forget about the core storyline

And speaking of secrets, let’s hone in on Liza’s shall we? After confessing her real age to boyfriend Josh (Tortorella) during last week’s episode, their relationship is officially in jeopardy as a result. While other shows may have opted to keep a bombshell like this under wraps for some time (we’re looking at you, “Pretty Little Liars”), “Younger’s” writers threw viewers a major curveball, and there could very well be more shocks to come.
