City boasts strong first quarter as private-sector employment rises

The city posted a strong first financial quarter this year, adding 31,300 private-sector jobs between Jan. 1 and March 31, according to Comptroller Scott Stringer.

That’s a 29 percent increase from the 24,200 jobs added in the first quarter of 2014.

Additionally, half the job gains were in high-wage sectors such as professional and business services and financial activities.

“There are hopeful signs that incomes may finally start to rise,” said Stringer.

Despite the jobs boost, the city’s unemployment rate ticked up from 6.5 percent to 6.6 percent.
