Twitter launches Periscope to combat Meerkat

Twitter is ready to go to live video.

The micro-blogging site released Periscope — its answer to Meerkat, which exploded on Twitter earlier this year.

Periscope, the live-streaming app that the company led by CEO Dick Costolo bought for a reported $100 million in January, has the ability to also play back older video streams, unlike Meerkat.

Periscope is available on iPhone and will have an Android app released this spring.

Early critiques of Periscope touch on its ease of use with a graphic interface that’s far more elegant than Meerkat.
