‘Empire’ soundtrack tops Madonna on Billboard 200

The Material Girl was no match for Lucious Lyon.

The “Empire” TV soundtrack debuted atop the Billboard 200 album chart, beating out Madonna’s “Rebel Heart” album.

Billboard crowned the soundtrack from the hit Fox series about a hip-hop mogul the winner for the week ended March 15, selling the equivalent of 130,000 album units. Madge was No. 2 with 121,000 album units.

The figures include on-demand streaming and digital track sales, as well as traditional album sales.

Billboard has been using so-called multi-metric consumption since December in an effort to better capture an album’s popularity.

Madonna’s 13th studio album got a small boost from a tie-in to concert-ticket sales. Each online ticket buyer received a 25-song digital version of “Rebel Heart.” Billboard estimated the tie-in generated just under 10,000 album equivalents.

Still, that’s a far cry from Madonna’s 2012 “MDNA,” which also used a concert ticket-album bundle. First-week sales for that release totaled 359,000 — about half of which were attributed to the ticket tie-in.
