Patient injured in ambulance crash to be taken off life support

A 60-year-old Bronx woman who had just undergone brain surgery was severely injured when an ambulance taking her to a rehab facility crashed – and she will soon be taken off life support, according to a report.

Janet Hickey suffered head and neck injuries Wednesday afternoon when the ambulance crossed a road and smashed into a utility pole on Route 9 in Sleepy Hollow, The Journal News reported.

“There were attempts to revitalize her,” Hickey’s brother, Jay Doyle, told the paper. “But we weren’t left with much of a choice.”

The SeniorCare Emergency Services ambulance was not using its lights or sirens as it made its way from a New York City hospital to Phelps Memorial Hospital, the paper reported.

Hickey was taken to Westchester Medical Center and declared brain dead, Doyle said.

The 19-year-old driver and 55-year-old emergency medical technician suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The family has decided to donate Hickey’s organs.

“My sister was a very generous soul,” Doyle told the paper. “Hopefully, we can use her generosity to save a life in the future.”

The longtime City Island resident worked at a local restaurant called Artie’s Steak & Seafood.
