City may extend operation of pools and beaches into Sept.

Summer wouldn’t end on Labor Day under a plan the city’s Parks Department is considering.

Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver disclosed Monday that pools and beaches that now close on Labor Day might be kept open through the end of September.

“It is something we are seriously taking a look at,” he told a City Council budget hearing.

“Our desire is to have some announcement before the season starts,” he said.

Last year, the pools and beaches closed on schedule — but public schools didn’t open until three days later.

That led Councilman Mark Levine (D-Manhattan) to introduce a bill in January calling for the facilities to keep operating on weekdays until school starts and on weekends through September.

The bill is now being reviewed by the Parks and Recreation Committee, which Levine heads.

The added days of surf and sand would come at a price — about $1 million a week, officials estimated.

They also said they want to make sure they can retain enough lifeguards to keep the pools and beaches safe, since many start returning to college at the end of August.

“That’s a consideration for us,” said Deputy Parks Commissioner Liam Kavanagh. “You can’t operate these facilities without a lifeguard.”
