St. John’s Pointer snubbed, held off All-Big East 1st team

So much for that talk of Sir’Dominic Pointer as a Big East Player of the Year candidate.

St. John’s do-everything senior didn’t even make the league’s all-conference first team, a surprising snub by the league’s coaches for the Red Storm’s most valuable player.

Pointer was bypassed by the league’s coaches in favor of teammate D’Angelo Harrison, the league’s second-leading scorer at 17.8 points per game who has been hampered by calf problems most of the conference season.

The 6-foot-6 Pointer, playing out of position at power forward all season for undersized St. John’s, is among the Big East leaders in virtually every significant category. Pointer is 10th in scoring (13.7 per game), fourth in rebounding (7.6), third in blocked shots (2.5), third in steals (2.0), sixth in field-goal percentage (52.6 percent), and 13th in assists (3.1).

“I thought it was a little bit of a travesty,” one Big East coach who voted for Pointer on the first team told The Post, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “The kid had as good of a year as anybody and helped St. John’s get to where they are.

“I feel bad for Dom because I think he really deserved it. The level he’s played, not only on the offensive end, but most importantly he’s affected the game so much defensively.”

Harrison was joined on the first team by Providence duo Kris Dunn and LaDontae Henton, Butler guard Kellen Dunham, Georgetown guard D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Villanova guards Darrun Hilliard and Ryan Arcidiacono. Hilliard, Dunn and Henton were unanimous selections.

The second team was made up of Pointer, Seton Hall guard Sterling Gibbs, Butler forward Roosevelt Jones, Marquette guard Matt Carlino and Xavier center Matt Stainbrook. DePaul guard Billy Garrett Jr. and Villanova forwards Daniel Ochefu and JayVaughn Pinkston were honorable mention.

Seton Hall placed two players on the all-rookie team: forward Angel Delgado and guard Isaiah Whitehead. Georgetown forward Isaac Copeland and guard L.J. Peak, Marquette guard Duane Wilson and Xavier forward Trevon Bluiett were also picked for the team, Delgado, the leading rebounder in the Big East at 9.9 per game, was a unanimous selection, as was Bluiett.

The Big East Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and Rookie of the Year will be announced Wednesday.
