Pomeranc’s reborn hotels to add property in Montreal

Sixty Hotels, the New York-based brand rising from the ashes of the former Thompson Hotels chain, will open its first international property in Montreal, CEO Jason Pomeranc told The Post.

Sixty also has its eyes on London, Pomeranc said, noting the East End, South London and other “untraditional areas” could be exciting locations for new hotels. “Going back to London is very important,” he said. “I consider it another home.”

Previously, Thompson had several international properties, including a London operation.

Pomeranc, with his father, Jack, and brothers Lawrence and Michael, launched 60 Thompson SoHo, now Sixty’s flagship, in 2001. It eventually grew into the 12-hotel Thompson Hotel Group, which merged with the Joie de Vivre chain in 2011 to form Commune Hotels & Resorts.

In 2013, Pomeranc pulled out of that venture with four of the original Thompson properties: SoHo, Lower East Side and 6 Columbus in New York and the Thompson in Beverly Hills, Calif. All were rebranded as Sixty Hotels a year ago.

In April, Sixty will open Nautilus South Beach in Miami. Pomeranc said Sixty wants to expand to eight to 10 cities in North America.

“We are eyeing markets in Southern California and might be close to something soon, but will tackle Miami’s opening first, finish up [the current overhaul of] SoHo and get Montreal on the right path,” Pomeranc said.

He sees also room for growth in cities like New Orleans and Austin, Texas, “secondary markets” that are now exciting, he said.

Pomeranc said the Montreal hotel is an existing building being redeveloped as a 120-room luxury property and will have the city’s first rooftop bar and pool.

The Montreal hotel will be the first in the new hotel group to have residences. Icrave and Canada’s Neuf collaborated on the design.
