Construction worker falls to death down elevator shaft

A major gut-renovation project on side-by-side Upper West Side townhomes turned tragic Wednesday morning when the manager of the construction plunged one story to his death down an open elevator shaft.

Frank Dragotta, 61, of Morganville, NJ, had been working on the five-story, 1880s properties at 130 and 132 West 70th St. on behalf of hedge-fund manager Roy Niederhoffer, who has been combining them into a single, 38-foot mega-home.

The city Department of Buildings has cited the property for failing to install a guardrail around the opening.
