City Council criticizes Astoria Cove project as unaffordable

Looks like it’s time to go back to the drawing board in Astoria.

City Council members slammed a 1,700-unit development plan for the Queens waterfront Monday, saying it skimps on affordable housing and lacks detail on the level of unionized labor.

“These [rental] rates are above market for the vast majority of people in my community,” said Councilman Costa Constantinides, who represents the Hallett’s Cove area where the project is planned. “Until Astoria Cove is made affordable to all Astorians, I can’t support the development.”

“You guys are way off,” Councilman Antonio Reynoso (D-B’klyn) told the developers, saying their plan to make 20 percent of the units affordable was inadequate.
