No ‘Flash’ in the pan: Superhero boosts The CW ratings

‘The Flash” is off to a speedy start.

The new CW drama averaged 4.5 million viewers in its 8 p.m. premiere on Tuesday — giving the network its most-watched debut since “The Vampire Diaries” in 2009.

“Flash” also edged out fellow comic-book drama “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” which drew 4.4 million viewers at 9 p.m. on ABC.

The series averaged a 1.8 rating with the under-50 demo — which combined with the strong “Supernatural” 10th season premiere at 9 p.m. — allowed The CW to top both ABC and Fox in the “money” demo on Tuesday.

“Flash” stars Grant Gustin (“Glee”) as Barry Allen, a CSI investigator who gains the power of super speed after getting struck by lightning and takes on a superhero persona to protect his city.
