‘Angry Birds’ maker to cut 130 jobs

The maker of “Angry Birds” is about to shove 130 employees out of the nest.

Rovio Entertainment on Thursday said it will be handing out pink slips to 16 percent of its payroll as it struggles to balance its sagging popularity with growing expenses.

The layoffs come just one day after the Finnish gamemaker unveiled the star-studded cast for an “Angry Birds” feature film, which it is financing.

Rovio has yet to say how much the film — starring Maya Rudolph, Jason Sudeikis and Bill Hader — will cost. Rising expenses have been one of the company’s biggest problems.

Rovio’s 2013 revenue rose by just 3 percent as fickle gamers turned from “Angry Birds” to such rivals as Candy Crush and Minecraft.

Net profits, meanwhile, plummeted by a whopping 50 percent due to Rovio’s massive expansion plans, which have included theme parks and a television studio in addition to the feature film.

Rovio also plans to “simplify” the business around three key areas — games, media, and consumer products — said Chief Executive Mikael Hed.
