Xavi was only flirting with New York City FC

After flirting with MLS expansion side New York City FC, Xavi is expected to stay with Spanish powerhouse Barcelona – for the moment. But that doesn’t preclude him coming stateside for next MLS season.

“Xavi will stay at Barça this year,” said a source from Spain close to Xavi who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the situation. “(Marca) reported the possibility to sign with NYC, but in the last hours Xavi has decided to stay at FCB.”

The 34-year-old midfielder played for Spain in the recent World Cup, and took time off to mull his future. After considering a copious offer from Qatar, New York City FC, the Red Bulls and Seattle, he ruled out moves to the former and latter. Now it appears New York is off the list – at least for now.

With New York City FC joining MLS next season, Spanish striker David Villa signed and will spend the winter on loan in Australia to stay fit. While Xavi opted not to do the same – reportedly a financial decision – it’s not out of the real of possibility that he could join New York City FC next year.

Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain helped spearhead Barcelona’s rise into arguably the greatest team of the modern era, and now both are running the front office of Premier League side Manchester City, which owns 75% of New York City FC. Reports had the pair luring Xavi to affiliate New York City FC on a three-year deal paying $8.1 million annually, but he can make more staying in Barcelona.

“He wants to play and at NYC won’t do it until 2015,”” the source said, adding “And at FCB he earns a lot of money. Much more at FCB than NYC.”
