Jets receivers still suffering from drop issues

Another Jets practice, some more ugly offense.

The team continues to struggle with dropped passes. Jets coach Rex Ryan bemoaned the drops before practice and then the team kept on dropping footballs.

“What wasn’t outstanding was I think the way we caught the football yesterday,” Ryan said Thursday morning before practice.

Then he watched the drops continue. Jeff Cumberland, Stephen Hill and Jeremy Kerley all had bad drops.

As for the quarterback competition, Geno Smith worked with the first team Thursday and Mark Sanchez was with the second.

Smith completed 2-of-7 passes in team drills with one drop. Sanchez completed 5-of-7 with a sack and a touchdown during red zone drills.

Sanchez tried to throw a block on cornerback Antonio Cromartie on a double reverse. Sanchez slipped and fell, but it looked like Cromartie knocked him down. That led to some jawing between Cromartie and offensive players, including Santonio Holmes.

Quinton Coples played outside linebacker in front of the media for the first time. He stood up on several plays outside and had to handle several read-option plays where he appeared to stick with the correct assignment.

Linebacker Ricky Sapp continues to have an impressive spring. He recorded another quarterback sack. … Running back Joe McKnight hurt his left ankle, the same ankle he injured last year, but returned to practice after a brief rest. He said he’s fine … Running back Mike Goodson was not at practice after his court hearing Thursday morning.
