Yankees sign Overbay after he’s released by Red Sox

The Yankees signed veteran first baseman Lyle Overbay to a minor league contract on Tuesday, hours after the 36-year-old was released by the Red Sox.

Overbay, who is expected to join the Yankees at spring training, was batting .220 (9-for-41) with five runs, three extra-base hits and seven RBIs in 19 spring training games as a non-roster invitee with the Red Sox. Last season, he hit .259 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 65 games with the Diamondbacks and Braves.

With Mark Teixeira out at least until May with a wrist injury, Overbay could potentially fill-in for the All-Star and will compete for the spot with Juan Rivera and Dan Johnson. Overbay has a .995 career fielding percentage, the seventh-highest mark for first baseman with at least 1,000 games played at the position since 2003.
