Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, the troubled Hofstra wing, found his way into trouble again, News 12 Long Island reported.
Police told the station Coombs-McDaniel was pulled over for driving without a seat belt Friday morning and is facing drug charges. Authorities said they found six marijuana-stuffed cigars in the cup holder of his 2011 Nissan Maxima. He was arrested and charged with criminal possession of marijuana and issued a traffic summons for not wearing a safety belt.
It is another black eye for the Hofstra men’s program, which had four key players arrested and suspended Dec. 1 for stealing Apple electronics products from six dorm rooms at the Hempstead, L.I., university.
Coombs-McDaniel, however, wasn’t a part of the program over the last semester, a source told The Post, and didn’t appear in a single game this year after suffering a serious knee injury. He didn’t practice and was leaving Hofstra anyway, the source said.
The 6-foot-7 transfer from UConn averaged 5.6 points for the Huskies’ national title team two years ago, but was arrested for marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia while at UConn, leading to his departure.
Despite a losing season without the suspended players, head coach Mo Cassara has done well to rebuild the program, landing seven players, including local standouts Richard Williams of Brooklyn and Marquise Moore of Queens.
