NY’s good ‘fortune’ in Congress

WASHINGTON — They’re powerful and rich.

Rep. Nita Lowey’s worth fell by more than $1 million last year, but she was still on the list of the richest members of Congress, financial-disclosure reports show.

A hedge fund that Lowey (D-Westchester) listed as worth at least $1 million in 2010 had no value last year.

Lowey was one of four New York congressional representatives among the 50 richest members of Congress, according to a list compiled by The Hill, a Washington news service. Lowey ranked 23rd, worth $14.3 million — mostly in hedge funds, private equity holdings and property.

Rep. Richard Hanna (R-Auburn) was right behind Lowey in 24th place, amassing $13.7 million. Hanna, who earned his fortune in construction, remained financially even last year with retirement and stock holdings, including investments in companies such as Boeing, Chevron and Coca-Cola.

Rep. Nan Hayworth (R-Goshen) placed 25th with $12.3 million. Hayworth, a former ophthalmologist, built her fortune in the medical-services industry. Her wealth increased last year by some $3 million.

Her funds included earnings through her former employer, Mount Kisco Medical Group.

The disclosures also include the worth of spouses, and Hayworth’s doctor husband owns several properties in Westchester and Dutchess counties.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan) also saw her wealth remain steady. Maloney ranked 31st with $10.1 million. Maloney’s riches are due to investments in properties in North Carolina, Virginia, Florida and Jamaica.

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) topped the list with $290.5 million, mostly in family trusts.
