Golf: Balin captures Met Open

Danny Balin of Burning Tree shot a 5-under 66 to win the 97th Met Open championship and $27,500 with a three-day total of 206 at Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J. Ryan McCormick, the second-round leader who plays at St. John’s, shot a 74 and tied for second.

Yani Tseng shot a 6-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Na Yeon Choi after the first round of the Canadian Women’s Open in Coquitlam, British Columbia.

TRACK: Blake runs 100 in 9.69

Yohan Blake matched the fastest 100-meter time run by anyone other than Usain Bolt, finishing in 9.69 seconds, the third fastest ever, to win the Athletissima Diamond League meet in Lausanne, Switzerland. Bolt holds the world record at 9.58.

COLLEGE: Ex-LSU star won’t play

Tyrann Mathieu’s father said the former LSU football star and Heisman Trophy finalist will not play this season. Tyrone Mathieu told ESPN his son is focused on working out his personal problems with former NBA coach and player John Lucas at the Right Step recovery center in Houston. Tyrann Mathieu was kicked off the team at LSU two weeks ago, reportedly for failed drug tests, and considered transferring.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said sophomore Everett Golson will start over junior Andrew Hendrix at quarterback in the opener Sept. 1 against Navy in Dublin.
