Jets defense keeps pressure on Sanchez, Tebow in practice

CORTLAND – The Jets did play some football Monday between fights.

The defense dominated the day again with both quarterbacks struggling against a ton of pressure. The offensive line is hurting with two starters out. Center Nick Mangold is still in London at the Olympics and right tackle Wayne Hunter is out with a lower back issue.

The defense recorded nine “sacks” in practice. The defenders are not allowed to actually tackle the quarterbacks, so all sacks are based on a judgment the quarterback would not have escaped.

Tim Tebow was on the receiving end of six of those sacks and went 3-for-8 in team drills. Mark Sanchez completed 5-of-11 and was sacked three times.

Sanchez threw his prettiest pass during 7-on-7 drills, hitting rookie Stephen Hill with a 50-yard touchdown strike over Darrelle Revis.

It was a good day for the rookies. Hill caught the 50-yarder from Sanchez and made a nice catch during one-on-one drills against cornerback Antonio Cromartie. First-round pick Quinton Coples had two sacks, his best practice of camp so far.

S LaRon Landry delivered a huge hit on RB Bilal Powell, even though practice was not supposed to be live for the running backs. Powell paid him back moments later giving Landry a shot as he picked him up on a blitz.

Rookie RB Terrance Ganaway left practice early. Running backs coach Anthony Lynn said Ganaway got a deep-tissue massage Sunday night, which he should not have done, and experienced tightness in his legs during practice.
