Cashman: Reggie could be back with Yankees by weekend

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says Reggie Jackson forced absence from the Yankees will be short-lived and could be back with the Yankees as soon as this weekend.

“I think you could see him as early as Friday,” Cashman told ESPNNewYork.com. “He is not banned.”

Cashman’s comments come a day after it was reported the Yankees had told Jackson to stay away from the clubhouse and events following his critical comments in Sports Illustrated regarding current Yankees Alex Rodriguez and Andy Pettitte as well as Mets Hall of Famer Gary Carter.

Jackson told The Post Monday night in Kansas City that his absence was a mutual decision between himself and the team to avoid the national spotlight with the Yankees heading to Fenway Park this past weekend to face the Red Sox.

“No, I’m not banned,” Jackson said. “I still have a great relationship with the Yankees, which I appreciate very much.”

The Yankees open a six-game homestand against the Angels and Blue Jays on Friday.
