Nets announce Shawne Williams will have foot surgery

The Nets suffered their latest injury setback Tuesday when the team announced forward Shawne Williams will undergo surgery Wednesday to remove a bone fragment from his left foot.

The surgery will be performed at Manhattan’s Hospital for Special Surgery, and the Nets said they would place a timetable on Williams’ recovery after the surgery.

Williams, who signed with the Nets following the lockout after spending last season with the Knicks, has been bothered by the foot all season long. It’s a pre-existing injury, and overcompensating for it led to a case of shin splints in his right leg that held him out of the lineup earlier this season. Williams had missed the past five games with left shoulder and foot injuries.

Williams has played in 25 games this season, averaging 4.5 points and 2.7 rebounds in 20.6 minutes per game.
