Heat on property-tax man

Another showdown is looming between the City Council and the city’s Finance Department over property taxes.

Council members yesterday questioned the reliability of the latest assessments rolls, as they did last year when Finance Commissioner David Frankel was summoned to explain out-of-line assessments.

Council Speaker Christine Quinn wondered why 111 Eighth Ave., which was purchased by Google last year, was now facing a 17 percent tax hike.

“Google made a long-term commitment to the city and the very next year their property-tax assessments jumped dramatically,” she said. “Changes like this do not inspire confidence in the system.
