Manhattan prosecutors dropped abortion charges yesterday against a young Washington Heights woman whose six-months-gestated fetus was found in a garbage bag outside her West 191st Street apartment building a month ago.
Prosecutors declined to comment on why they are not pursuing a case against Yaribely Almonte, 20. Investigators had believed at the time that she drank an herbal tea, available from local bodegas, that induced premature labor.
A building superintendent had discovered the fetus in a plastic garbage bag.
Almonte could have faced up to a year of jail on a misdemeanor count charging her with ending a pregnancy beyond its sixth month.
