CHSAA/Private boys basketball roundup: Dominant Hayes cruises into Kreul Classic final

Another stellar defensive effort has sent Cardinal Hayes into the Kreul Classic Sweet Sixteen Championship final.

The Ravens topped Florida power St. Thomas Aquinas, 54-38, Monday afternoon behind 14 points from Amadou Sidibe. In three victories in the Coral Springs, Fla., tournament, Hayes has yet to give up more than 52 points.

Jalen Jenkins added 12 points, Shavar Newkirk tallied 10 and Tyler Wilson and Naasir Williams had eight apiece for undefeated Hayes (8-0), which meets Coral Springs Christian Academy (Fla.) Tuesday at 9 p.m. in the championship game.

Montverde Academy (Fla.) 80, St. Raymond 61: Daniel Dingle went off for 26 points and Shane Rector had 16 points, but it wasn’t enough for St. Ray’s (5-1) against one of the nation’s top teams in the quarterfinals of the City of Palms Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Anthony Perez had 18 points and Miguel Cartagena and Patricio Garina each had 16 points for Montverde, ranked No. 7 in the country by USA Today.

St. Raymond meets No. 6 Mater Dei (Calif.) in a fifth-place semifinal 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Montverde advances to the tournament semifinals Tuesday against No. 17 Grace Prep (Texas).

Collegiate 59, Columbus (Fla.) 54: Willie Gwathmey made three 3-pointers and scored 21 points, Connor Huff followed with 19 points and Ryan Frankel had 13 for Collegiate (4-0) in the Kreul Classic Publix Challenge semifinals in Coral Springs, Fla. The Dutchmen take on Father Carr of Toronto Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the final.

Holy Cross 85, Flushing 48: Mairega Clarke had 23 points and 12 rebounds, Terrell Williams had 14 points and Eddie Roscigno had 10 points for Holy Cross (6-1).

St. Peter’s 53, St. Joseph by the Sea 38: Latrell Curtis and Andrew Cannon each had 18 points to lead St. Peter’s (3-3). Justin Henderson led Sea (3-4) with 15 points.

Moore Catholic 74, Port Richmond 51: Mark Fiorello and Scott Schaefer each had 13 points to lead Moore (9-0). Frank Schettino and John Baggs both had 12 points and Jordan Sanders added 11. Port Richmond is 0-9.

St. Edmund Prep 78, Lafayette 58: Matt O’Neill had 24 points, Nick Grasso had 14 points and Altine King added 12 points for St. Edmund (6-1). Chris Tsatsis added 11 points. Shaqkeel Waldron had 16 for Lafayette.

St. Dominic (L.I.) 44, Bishop Ford 39: Josh Blagrove had 15 points and Daquian Youngblood had 13 points for Ford (1-6).

CHSAA CLASS B

Sacred Heart 86, Scanlan 37: John Gauese had 20 points and Myck Coleman had 18 points for Sacred Heart (2-2, 1-0 ‘B’). B.J. White had 17 points and Arjon Bequiri added 10. Scanlan is 0-6.
