Shrink killer still unfit for trial

Four years ago, paranoid schizophrenic David Tarloff admittedly slashed a well-loved psychiatrist to death in her Upper East Side office — and yesterday, there was more hardship for the victim’s family.

Four siblings of murdered Dr. Kathryn Faughey came to Manhattan Supreme Court expecting a hearing demanded by Tarloff himself, in which he hoped to challenge doctors’ findings that he is mentally unfit for trial — only to learn that Tarloff had decided at the last minute not to show.

He has changed his mind, and will not challenge doctors’ recent finding that he cannot understand the charges against him and participate in his own defense, said Steve Harkavy, deputy director of Mental Hygiene Legal Service of state Supreme Court.

“He’s still not deemed competent . . . to stand trial,” Harkavy said.
