Buck stops at top for Giants

* Last week against the Eagles, the nation witnessed one of the worst coaching performances in recent Giants history. Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride continues to call plays that lack imagination and innovation. He has yet to realize the Giants are now a pass-first team. Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell demonstrated his passive game-plan by using only three or four rushers against an inept quarterback, Vince Young, who had barely played in a year. Fewell has some of the best pass rushers in the league, but refuses to blitz as often as he should.

* As a Giants fan, I love coach Tom Coughlin; not only has he won a Super Bowl, but also his teams are competitive every year. He is a great teacher and an inspirational figure, but he needs to take a lesson from Jets coach Rex Ryan. When you get to the last third of the schedule, the team that hits the hardest wins the game. If they don’t start getting into it, they will fall short again.

Boo who?

* Will Brandon Jacobs ever learn those booing fans are, ultimately, the source of his many millions?

MVP-O’ed

* Once again, a Yankee has been screwed in the MVP voting. Curtis Granderson had all the qualifications of an MVP, and a damn good case can be made for him winning the award. He should have finished no worse than second. Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, who won both the Cy Young and MVP in the American League, participated in 21 percent of the games his team played. Jose Bautista couldn’t lift the Blue Jays above fourth place all season. How valuable were they to their teams? The only ones for whom you can make a credible case for finishing ahead of Granderson were Jacoby Ellsbury or Adrian Gonzalez, who were probably hurt by the Red Sox’s late-season collapse.

Power outage

* How can the Rangers’ power play be so pathetic year after year after year? They change personnel and it still stinks. You think it has anything to do with their pig-headed, arrogant coach, John Tortorella? Maybe he can blame Sean Avery.

A ‘fine’ mess

* Roger “Do-Gooder” Goodell already has tried to eliminate kick returns, and now the NFL commissioner, in all his wisdom, has fined Rex Ryan $75,000 for dropping the F-bomb? Goodell’s tinkering with the rules of the game and the elastic scheduling have induced more F-bombs from the true NFL fanbase than government bailouts. So, Roger, who gets the $75,000? The rules committee or the scheduling department?
