Snow-play street fight in B’klyn

A plan to close off a busy Brooklyn street to give schoolkids a place to play on snowy days has been met with a blizzard of criticism.

“There’s no parking as it is here — this would be a disruption. This is not the right thing to do,” fumed Beverly DiCovello, who blasted the proposal to block Carroll Street between Court and Smith streets in Carroll Gardens so that PS 58 students can frolic on days when it’s too snowy to play on school property. School officials said they proposed the closure because the thick painted surface of its recess yard would be damaged if snowplows barrel through after a storm.

“We only want to close the street when it snows to the point where we can’t play in our yard,” insisted Joan Bredthauer, the school’s parent coordinator.

Civic leaders voiced skepticism, particularly since the street is adjacent to busy Carroll Park.

“This is going to be an issue because you’ve got the convergence of two busy commercial corridors and a park that would be impacted,” said Craig Hammerman, district manager of Community Board 6.

“We probably should look to see what alternatives exist,” he added.
